Hachiko Talks About Saint Bernard
I’m Hachiko, and as I continue to introduce dog breeds on my website, today we meet a true gentle giant: the Saint Bernard.
These dogs have a legendary history. Originally bred by monks at the Saint Bernard Hospice in the Swiss Alps, they were rescue dogs braving snowstorms and avalanches to find lost travelers. Strength, endurance, and a kind heart were all part of the job.
Saint Bernards are massive and powerful, with a thick coat built to handle cold weather. But their size hides a sweet, gentle nature. They are calm, loving, and patient especially with children. You’ll often hear them called “nanny dogs” for good reason.
Training should start early. They are eager to please but need guidance, especially when they are young and full of energy. Socialization is also key exposing them to people and places helps shape their calm, steady character.
Daily walks and play keep them healthy, though they are not high energy dogs. Be mindful of their joints as they grow these big dogs take time to mature.
Health wise, Saint Bernards are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia, heart conditions, and bloat. A balanced diet, controlled growth, and regular vet care will help them thrive.
Litters often have 6 to 10 puppies. The pups are irresistibly cute and they grow fast! Early training is important, as a fully grown Saint Bernard can weigh well over 70 kilos.
If you dream of a loyal, gentle companion with a heart as big as their body, the Saint Bernard is a wonderful choice. A true friend for life.
