Hachiko Talks About Dog Psychology — What We Feel but Can’t Say
I’m Hachiko. You know me as the dog who waited but what many forget is that I didn’t just wait.
I felt. Hope. Fear. Loneliness. Joy.
We dogs have a world inside us even if we don’t speak your language.
We feel your mood. We sense your stress.
We read the room faster than your eyes do.
And when you leave… we wait, not knowing if you’ll return.
What shapes a dog’s mind?
Our psychology is shaped by 3 things:
Instinct our breed, our roots.
Environment where and how we live.
Bonding how we’re treated by the humans we trust.
When you raise a dog with fear, we become fearful.
When you raise us with patience, we become brave.
We are not toys. We don’t reset.
We remember. We carry things.
Signs we’re not okay
Sudden silence from a once playful dog.
Hiding, licking, trembling.
Chewing, barking too much, tail chasing.
No eye contact.
Sudden aggression or withdrawal.
These are not “bad behavior.
They’re signs. Messages.
A silent bark that says:
Something inside me is off.
What we really need
Routine. It makes us feel safe.
Space. Sometimes we need to be quiet too.
Time with you. Presence means more than toys.
Clear boundaries, kind tone, steady energy.
You may think we’re just pets.
But to us, you are our entire world.
So if one day your dog looks away, hides, or becomes restless…
Don’t just say “he’s being weird.”
Say: “He’s trying to tell me something.”
Feel it.
Like I did.
For years.
Because a dog with a healthy mind is not just easier to live with
it’s a dog who feels safe enough to love, to trust, and to stay.
Note
Dogs can be prescribed antidepressants in certain cases especially for anxiety, aggression, or obsessive behaviors.
Medications like fluoxetine (Prozac) or clomipramine are sometimes used, but only under a veterinarian’s supervision.
These are not quick fixes; they work best alongside behavior training and a stable environment.
Never give human medication to a dog without veterinary guidance.
